About the campaign

The world went through a difficult time due to COVID-19, we all unlearnt the things we had known all our lives & embraced a new normal. A lot of people were feeling isolated because they were (some still are) stuck at home, and not able to go out. While a lot of us are now returning to work and have started meeting friends, most people with intellectual disabilities are still living the normal they have always known. In hopes of changing this, we bring to you, #1000CranesForInclusion – A campaign built on hope for an inclusive world.

Born out of crisis and the need for fellowship, a group of youth leaders with and without intellectual disabilities seized the opportunity and got together to create a series of “How to” webinars to gift their skills and showcase the myriad of talents within the movement. From there they chanced upon the legend of the Senbazuru and decided to take on the challenge of creating 1000 cranes.  It was also their way of being bearers of hope and blessings amidst the gloomy outlook.

What started off just as a mini afternoon-tea activation – to engage a legion of 50-plus youth trapped indoors with boundless creativity and time on their hands – has now taken flight. #1000CranesForInclusion has since been adopted by Special Olympics globally as a rallying call, not just to youths but everyone supporting the inclusion movement. While we focus on helping PWIDs change the normal they have always known with #MyNormal; #1000CranesForInclusion is our step towards a more inclusive world.  Here we present 16 of our Athlete & Youth leaders who kickstarted this initiative and are inviting everyone to become a part of this journey to fold 1000 cranes as their wish for a more accepting and inclusive world. But of course, 1000 Cranes is our minimum and it’s definitely not the limit. We are hoping to have people fold as many cranes as possible and to share them on social media.

We’re relying on you to change the normal people with intellectual disabilities have known. We might not be able to change the past they’ve lived but together, we can change the tomorrow they will know.
