Brina Kei Maxino

Brina is a 23-year-old from the Philippines, who was born with Down Syndrome. At 9 days old, a doctor said that she would not likely survive. At 7 years old, a psychologist said that her IQ was too low for her to finish Grade School. But her parents refused to believe them and did everything to make sure that Brina would be as functional as possible. Brina proved the world wrong, and graduated from a regular High School as the Class Valedictorian. In 2017, she graduated from college with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and major in History. She also earned her Certificate in General Clerical Skills and a Diploma.

Brina is now working as an Assistant Teacher in a regular Grade School. Her journey with Special Olympics started in 2012 when she was appointed as Global Youth Ambassador, representing the Asia Pacific region. In 2019 she was handpicked to join the Special Olympics Sargent Shriver International Global Messenger Class of 2019-2023. Her latest achievement was being chosen by the United Nations as a UNESCO Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Champion for Education and Inclusion.
